Introduction
Do your neck and shoulders feel tight after a long day at the desk? You are not alone. Many of us carry tension in the upper body without noticing it. The good news: a simple, 5-minute qigong practice can help you release that stiffness, calm your mind, and restore a sense of ease—right at home, with no equipment needed.

Why This Gentle Movement Works
In traditional Chinese wellness, qigong is about moving your energy, or "qi," smoothly through the body. When we are stressed or sit still for hours, the qi can get stuck, leading to tight muscles and discomfort. This small practice uses slow, mindful movements and deep breathing to unblock the flow, relax the muscles, and bring peace back to your body.
Step-by-Step: The Neck and Shoulder Release
1. Get Ready
Stand or sit comfortably. Keep your back straight but not stiff. Place your hands on your thighs. Take three slow breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, to center yourself.
2. Slow Neck Turns
Inhale gently as you turn your head to the right, as far as feels comfortable. Keep your jaw relaxed. Exhale slowly as you bring your head back to center. Repeat on the left. Do this 3 times each side.
3. Shoulder Circles
Inhale as you lift your shoulders up toward your ears. Exhale as you roll them back and down. Imagine drawing a big circle with your shoulders. Do this 5 times slowly, then switch direction.
4. Side Stretch with Breath
Inhale and reach your right arm up and over your head, leaning gently to the left. Keep your hips steady. Exhale as you return. Switch sides. Repeat 3 times each.
5. Finish with Palms on Chest
Place both palms over your heart center. Close your eyes. Take 5 slow breaths, feeling the warmth of your hands and the gentle rise and fall of your chest. Thank your body for this quiet moment.
How It Helps
- Loosens tight neck and shoulder muscles
- Encourages deeper, calmer breathing
- Helps move stagnant energy (qi) for a feeling of lightness
- Can be done anytime, anywhere—no mat or special clothes needed
Final Thoughts
This 5-minute qigong routine is a simple act of self-care. By moving slowly and breathing with intention, you not only release physical tension but also invite a peaceful mind. Try it once a day, especially after long hours of sitting, and notice how your body feels lighter and more comfortable.
