Gentle Tai Chi: One Move Per Day to Alleviate Stiffness and Relax the Body and Mind

Introduction: Why the Elderly Need Gentle Exercise?

After aging, it's common for the body to become stiff and joints to be less flexible. However, you don't have to endure these discomforts - spending ten minutes a day doing a gentle set of Tai Chi movements can promote smooth flow of qi and blood, and stretch the muscles and bones. Today, we introduce a simple and effective technique: "Cloud Hand Pushing Palm," which requires no equipment and can be practiced at home.

Technique Details: Cloud Hand Pushing Palm

Applicable Areas

Shoulders, neck, upper back, wrists, and hips. Especially suitable for practicing when feeling stiff after waking up in the morning or after long periods of sitting.

Exercise Steps

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and hands naturally hanging by the sides of the body.
  • Inhale, slowly raise the right hand to the chest, palm facing inward, as if holding a cloud.
  • Exhale, slowly push the right hand to the right, while the body slightly turns to the right, and the left hand naturally moves to the abdomen.
  • Inhale, bring the right hand back to the chest; then push the left hand to the left.
  • Repeat each side 8 times, coordinating with breathing, and the slower the better.

Respiration Coordination

Exhale when pushing the hand, inhale when retracting the hand. Breathe through the nose and exhale through the mouth, evenly and slowly. If dizziness occurs, slow down or reduce the number of repetitions.

Mild Adjustment Principle

This movement imitates the flow of clouds, using the waist as the axis to move the arms, which can unblock the meridians of the three yin and three yang hands, promoting blood and qi circulation. The slow twisting and stretching act like oiling the joints, reducing stiffness. At the same time, focusing on breathing and movements can relax the brain and relieve stress.

Summary

Practicing "Cloud Hand Pushing Palm" for 10 minutes daily will make you feel lighter, your shoulders more relaxed, and your sleep improved. After a week of consistent practice, stiffness will significantly decrease. The important thing is: don't force yourself, don't pursue perfection, just comfort is enough.
