Five Minutes a Day: Pressing the Neiguan Point to Alleviate Body Tension and Fatigue

Introduction

After a long day at work, do you feel tense all over and have a headache? Maybe just 5 minutes with one finger is enough. In traditional Chinese medicine, there's a simple method - pressing the Neiguan point. It requires no tools and can be done anytime, anywhere at home or in the office. It's effortless and time-saving, yet it can help gently unblock meridians, balance qi and blood, and gradually relax your body and mind.

Technique Details: Neiguan Point Pressing Method

Which discomforts does it apply to?

  • Stress, anxiety, restlessness
  • Chest tightness, difficulty breathing
  • Insomnia, frequent dreams, restless sleep
  • Wrist and arm soreness caused by fatigue

Pressing location

The Neiguan point is located on the inner side of the forearm, about three fingers' width above the wrist crease, between two tendons. Gently clenching your fist will help you clearly find this depression point.

Operation method

  • Use the thumb pad of the opposite hand, place it on the Neiguan point, apply gentle pressure, and it should feel slightly sore and swollen.
  • First, rub in a clockwise direction for 60 seconds, then rub counterclockwise for 60 seconds.
  • Do 2-3 minutes on each arm, totaling no more than 5 minutes.
  • Respiratory coordination: inhale slowly while pressing, exhale slowly when releasing, which yields better results.

Mild regulation principle

The Neiguan point is an important acupoint on the Pericardium Meridian. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that it can "relieve chest discomfort, regulate qi, calm the mind, and soothe the spirit." Gentle pressing is equivalent to sending the body a signal to "slow down," helping to balance qi and blood, relieve excessive excitement of the sympathetic nervous system, and gradually bring the whole body into a calm and comfortable state. It is safe and risk-free for home-based light health care.

Summary

Just 5 minutes a day pressing the Neiguan point can give you a moment of tranquility amidst a busy schedule. This small technique doesn't seek immediate results, but with persistence, you will find your body feels lighter and your mood more stable. Health preservation can sometimes be so simple.
