Introduction: Say Goodbye to Shoulder and Neck Pain, Start with Qigong
Do you often feel stiff neck and heavy shoulders from long hours in front of a computer or hunching over your phone? Don't worry, some gentle movements in traditional qigong can help you easily relieve discomfort. No equipment is needed, just spend a few minutes each day to restore vitality to your shoulders and neck.

1. Shrugging Shoulders to Relieve the Neck: Activate Blood and Qi Flow
Stand or sit upright, relax your entire body. Inhale deeply, and lift both shoulders up toward your ears with force; hold your breath for 3 seconds, feeling the tension in your shoulders and neck; then exhale slowly, letting your shoulders relax and drop down instantly. Repeat 5-8 times. This movement quickly stretches the trapezius muscle and promotes local blood circulation.
2. Slow Head and Neck Rotations: Alleviate Stiff Muscles
Keep your spine straight and slightly tuck your chin. Slowly turn your head to the left until you feel a mild stretch, maintain natural breathing for 5 seconds; then return your head to the center, and turn it to the right. Repeat 4 times on each side. Remember to move slowly like Tai Chi, and avoid forcing too much. This helps gently mobilize the cervical joints.
3. Hands Holding the Sky: Stretch the Entire Upper Body
Cross your fingers with palms facing up, and slowly raise them above your head. At the same time, inhale, feeling your entire spine being stretched; extend your arms as high as possible, holding for three breaths; then exhale, slowly lowering your hands from the sides. Repeat 3-5 times. This movement opens the chest cavity and relieves shoulder and neck pressure caused by hunched posture.
4. Arms Hugging the Head to Expand the Back: Relax the Scapular Area
Place your hands behind your head, and spread your elbows outward. Inhale, trying to stretch your elbows backward, feeling your scapulae moving toward the middle; exhale, returning your elbows to the front. Repeat 6-8 times. This exercise is very effective for "rounded shoulders" and upper back stiffness caused by prolonged sitting.
Summary: Gentle Daily Care Lies in Consistency
The four gentle qigong exercises above can effectively relax your shoulders and neck if practiced once daily during work breaks. The core principle is: gentle movements, combined with deep breathing, and not forcing yourself. Remember "movement generates Yang energy," when the blood and qi flow smoothly, stiffness naturally disappears. It is recommended to practice once in the morning and once in the evening. With long-term persistence, you will gain a relaxed and comfortable physical condition.
